A model of fluff layer erosion and subsequent bed erosion in the presence of the bioturbator, Hydrobia ulvae ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Le Hir, Pierre; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Previous studies have shown that the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae destabilizes the top layers of fine-grained sediments. This process is mediated by the formation of a "biogenic" fluff layer that includes tracks, faecal pellets and mucus. This fluff layer has been shown to be easily resuspended before general bed erosion. In order to examine how fluff layer and bed. erosion interact, flume experiments were performed with fluid sediments of varying water contents. Ten thousand snails were placed and allowed to crawl for 5 h on the sediment surface, and then the resuspended sediment mass was measured in response to step-wise shear stress increases. Two distinct erosion phases were observed: (1) initial resuspension of the fluff layer and (2) the subsequent bed...

Anthrophisation in introduction d'espèces exogènes: mise en place de l'analyse génétique d'une population invasive de bigorneaux perceurs Ocinebrellus inornatus (Recluz, 1851) dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer
Garcia-meunier, Pascale; Saab, Lucie; Pigeot, Jacques; Chevalier, Guillemette; Goulletquer, Philippe; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.

Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Merceron, Michel; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Marine fish farming is fairly recent in France and it is still in the process of being developed. On the Atlantic and Channel coasts, it deals mainly with Atlantic salmon (Salma salar), fario trout (Salmonella faria) with l,400 t in 1991, and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) with 600 t. In Gravelmes a bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and bream (Sparus auratus) farm (1,000 t) uses water which is heated (Mediterranean production for these two species is around 2,000 t). Although these figures are low compared to French shellfish farming (200,000 t) and foreign fish farms (150,000 t in Norway, for example), they are growing.

Cadmium pathways in an exploited intertidal ecosystem with chronic cadmium inputs (Marennes-Oleron, Atlantic coast, France) ArchiMer
Pigeot, J; Miramand, P; Guyot, T; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Fichet, D; Le Moine, Olivier; Huet, V.
The Marennes-Oleron Bay is subject to chronic pollution by cadmium (Cd) from the Gironde watershed. An ecosystem approach was used to study the fate of cadmium in the different biological compartments. The median Cd concentration was 0.4 mu g g(-1) dry weight for the 63 benthic species measured. When combined with the respective biomasses for the different species studied, we estimated that 7 kg of Cd is partitioned into the soft tissues of the benthic species in the bay. The majority of this cadmium was distributed between primary producers, mainly microphytobenthos (40 %), and suspension-feeders, mainly oysters (40 %). All other benthic species measured were associated with negligible masses of Cd. Two trophic levels contained 98 % of the Cd: 3 kg was...

Can molluscan assemblages give insights into Holocene environmental changes other than sea level rise? A case study from a macrotidal bay (Marennes-Oleron, France) ArchiMer
Poirier, Clement; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Chaumillon, Eric; Allard, Jonathan.
During the Late Holocene, the rate of sea level rise decreased and climate changes, hydrodynamic processes or anthropogenic impacts became predominant parameters governing the sedimentary infill of estuarine environments. The aim of this study is to describe the response of past benthic mollusc communities to these forcing factors. Mollusc skeletal remains were sampled from three 8000, 5500 and 2600 year-long sedimentary records in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (Atlantic Coast, France), where environmental changes have previously been identified thanks to a combination of very high resolution seismic profiles and sedimentological data. Molluscan assemblages successfully record environmental changes, even at the smallest temporal scale. They provide relevant...

Cartographie krigée des mollusques suspensivores compétiteurs trophiques des huîtres du bassin de Marennes-Oléron : l'implications pour la planification de l'échantillonnage ArchiMer
Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Bacher, Cedric.
Stock assessement of wild soft-bottom mol/uses has been part of a general approach to shellfish management in oyster farming in Marennes-Oleron Bay. A sampling survey is described as a stratified random sampling after optimum allocation of the sample sire in each stratum. The aim of this study is ta ilIustrate the use of kriging techniques in the case of suspension-feeders. Regarding suspension-feeding molluscs. trophic competitors of the oyster Crassostrea gigas the whole stratified design produced an estimation with a precision around 25%. Then the geostatistical technique. i.e. kriging was used to depict the spatial and variability patterns of several trophic groups. The biomass data are expressed in ash-free. dry-weight units. In addition, the...

Inverse analysis was used to model the food webs of two intertidal mudflat ecosystems: Aiguillon Cove (AC) and Brouage Mudflat (BM) (south-western Atlantic coast, France). The aim of the present study is to describe and compare the functioning of these two ecosystems. The method of inverse analysis has been adapted in order to take into account, in a single calculation, two seasons: spring/summer (mid-March to mid-October) and autumn/winter (the rest of the year). Gathering all available data on the two sites, the most important gaps in knowledge were identified with the help of sensitivity analyses: they concerned mainly the exports of material by grazing fish (such as mullet Liza ramada), resuspension of microphytobenthos, and fluxes linked to microfauna...

Contribution to a synopsis of marine species richness in the Pertuis Charentais Sea with new insights in soft-bottom macrofauna of the Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, Xavier; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
The catalogue of soft-bottom macrofauna in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (French Atlantic coast) has been updated from a benthic survey conducted in April-May 1995. 262 stations were selected using a stratified random strategy based on sediment types and bathymetric levels. 231 soft-bottom macrofauna species were identified. A synopsis of all available literature since the first local marine study published in 1710 by Antoine Ferchauld de Reaumur indicated that 60 benthic species were reported in the Marennes-Oleron Bay for the first time. The sampling effort, i.e. more than 1 station per km(2) and size of the sieving square mesh (1 mm), can partially explain these results. Most of the new recorded species were crustaceans (28 species) and polychaete annelids...

Crepidula fornicata L. (mollusque, gastéropode) en baie de Marennes-Oléron : cartographie des fonds par sonar à balayage latéral et estimation du stock ArchiMer
Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Pichocki-seyfried, C; Walker, P; De Montaudouin, Xavier; Palud, Cecile; Heral, Maurice.
Extensive and detailed subtidal ground mapping of the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Fouras-Aix areas was performed with a side-scan sonar. Side-scan sonographs gave a comprehensive view of sedimentological bottom environments and also allowed us to outline locations of grounds colonised by the gastropod mollusc Crepidula fornicata L. with a precise estimate of their surface. A sedimentological map of the centre of the Marennes-Oleron Bay is given, describing spatial organisation of the following four types of sediment: pure mud, fine sand, coarse sand and rocks. Crepidula beds were also recognised on sonographs and were estimated to cover 181 hectares in the Fouras-Aix area and 615 hectares within the Marennes-Oleron Bay. Standard sampling methods were then...

Dynamics and sources of suspended particulate organic matter in the Marennes-Oléron oyster farming bay: Insights from stable isotopes and microalgae ecology ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Ryckaert, Mireille; Malestroit, Pascale; Guillou, Gael.
The aim of this study was to distinguish between sources of the complex variety of Marennes-Oléron Bay suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) contributing to the tropho-dynamics of the Marennes-Oléron oyster farming bay. Basic biomarkers (Chl a, C/N and POC/Chl a ratios), carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes from SPOM were analyzed and the microalgae community was characterized. The sampling strategy was bimonthly from March 2002 to December 2003; samples were taken from an intertidal mudflat. Four main sources contributed to the SPOM pool: terrigenous input from rivers, neritic phytoplankton, resuspended microphytobenthos and periodic inputs from intertidal Zostera noltii meadows. Seasonal fluctuations were observed in both years of the study period:...

In coastal systems, the multiplicity of sources fueling the pool of particulate organic matter (POM) leads to divergent estimations of POM composition. Eleven systems (two littoral systems, eight embayments and semi-enclosed systems and one estuary) distributed along the three maritime façades of France were studied for two to eight years in order to quantify the relative contribution of organic matter sources to the surface-water POM pool in coastal systems. This study was based on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios, used for running mixing models. The POM of the estuary is dominated by terrestrial material (93% on average), whereas the POM of the other systems is dominated by phytoplankton (84% on average). Nevertheless, for the latter...

In costal systems, particulate organic matter (POM) results from a multiplicity of sources having their respective dynamics in terms of production, decomposition, transport and burial. The POM pool experiences thus considerable spatial and temporal variability. In order to better understand this variability, the present study employs statistical multivariate analyses to investigate links between POM composition and environmental forcings for a panel of twelve coastal systems distributed along the three maritime regions of France and monitored weekly to monthly for 1 to 8 years. At multi-system scale, two main gradients of POC composition have been identified: a ‘Continent-Ocean’ gradient associated with hydrodynamics, sedimentary dynamics and depth of the...
